Opihr Oriental Spiced London Dry Gin

Opihr Oriental Spiced London Dry Gin

Opihr · G&J Distillers

80 proofNASWarrington, Cheshire, England
Opihr channels the ancient spice routes into a London Dry framework with remarkable coherence. The pepper-forward warmth and exotic botanical blend make it a natural fit for the 'Warmth Before Silence' theme — it glows with lingering spice heat that fades into a contemplative, quiet finish. An accessible yet genuinely distinctive gin that rewards slow sipping as much as mixing.

Tasting Notes

Nose

A heady rush of black pepper and cubeb berries opens the aroma, followed by warm cardamom, coriander seed, and a resinous juniper underpinning. Faint citrus peel and a whisper of cumin emerge as the spirit breathes, like embers cooling in a spice market at dusk.

Palate

Rich and warming on entry, with a wave of ginger and tellicherry peppercorn that builds across the mid-palate. Juniper holds its ground beneath layers of coriander, cubeb, and a subtle earthy sweetness reminiscent of sandalwood. The texture is oily and full-bodied for a London Dry, carrying a gentle heat that radiates outward rather than stinging.

Finish

Long, dry, and slowly fading — the pepper lingers alongside resinous juniper and a trailing note of dried orange peel. The warmth recedes gradually, like the last ember of a fire settling into ash.

Food Pairing

The peppery warmth and coriander notes in Opihr find a natural companion in well-spiced lamb kofta. The char on the eggplant mirrors the gin's resinous juniper depth, while the cool creaminess of tahini provides a counterpoint to the spirit's slow heat. Together, they create a meal that glows warm and fades softly — warmth before silence on the palate.

The Story

Named for the legendary ancient region famed for its gold, Opihr traces the old spice routes from the Mediterranean through India and into the Far East. Master distiller Joanne Moore at G&J Distillers — one of England's oldest gin-making houses, founded in 1761 — sources botanicals from three continents: cubeb berries from Indonesia, black pepper from India, and coriander from Morocco, marrying them with English juniper in a traditional copper pot still. The result is a gin that embodies the warmth of distant lands arriving at a cold English port — heat carried across oceans, slowly dissipating in the silence of arrival. In this issue's theme, Opihr represents the grain's last ember quite literally: its pepper-driven warmth is a slow burn that fades with grace, leaving behind only the memory of fire.

St. George Dry Rye Reposado Gin

St. George Spirits

St. George's barrel-aged rye gin sits at the crossroads of whiskey and gin, using fire twice — once to dry-roast botanicals, once through barrel maturation. The result is a gin with structure and warmth that holds up beautifully in stirred cocktails where a London Dry would feel thin. A bridge bottle for whiskey lovers exploring gin.

Beefeater Burrough's Reserve Oak Rested Gin

Beefeater

Master Distiller Desmond Payne's vision of what happens when the spirit meets the cask is brought to vivid life in Burrough's Reserve Oak Rested. Rested in hand-selected Jean de Lillet oak casks — previously used to age the storied French aperitif — this gin embodies the issue's theme at its most literal: the barrel's inner skin imparts golden color, vanilla richness, and a gentle tannic framework without ever eclipsing the juniper-forward London Dry character. It occupies a fascinating middle ground between gin and aged spirit, rewarding both neat sipping and barrel-aged cocktails.

Bols Genever Barrel Aged 18 Month

Bols

A masterclass in patience applied to the gin family tree. Where most gins celebrate the instant brightness of distillation, Bols Barrel Aged 18 Month embraces the slow alchemy of oak and time. The result is a spirit that bridges the worlds of aged whiskey and botanical distillate — furnace-forged grain spirit tempered into something deeply contemplative. Perfectly aligned with "The Furnace of Patience," this genever proves that even the juniper berry bows to time's authority.
