Rock Rose Gin Original Edition

Rock Rose · Dunnet Bay Distillers

83.4 proofNASCaithness, Scotland
Dunnet Bay is about as far north as mainland Scotland goes, and the harshness of the landscape seems to translate into a gin of real backbone. The local rhodiola rosea root adds an unusual floral dimension without becoming perfumed. This is craft gin with a genuine sense of place.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Juniper leads cleanly, both green and resinous, with a wave of sweet orange and a gentle floral undertone. Behind that sits a warming ginger note and an herbaceous quality from the local botanicals.

Palate

Bright and textured, with a piney juniper core supported by coriander seed warmth and a citrus-forward brightness. Mid-palate develops a delicate rose-petal quality alongside a subtle peppery kick that adds structure.

Finish

Medium-length with lingering juniper and a dry, slightly peppery close tempered by residual floral sweetness.

Highland G&T — 2 oz Rock Rose Gin · 4 oz premium tonic water · Build in a copa glass with plenty of ice, garnish with a slice of pink grapefruit and a sprig of fresh rosemary.

Food Pairing

Small buckwheat blini topped with cold-smoked Scottish salmon, crème fraîche, and fresh dill — the gin's juniper and pepper complement the salmon's salinity and smoke.

The Story

Distilled on Scotland's remote north coast in Caithness by husband-and-wife team Martin and Claire Murray, Rock Rose takes its name from the rhodiola rosea plant that clings to the local cliffs and contributes to the gin's distinctive botanical bill.
