Domaine Albert Boxler · Domaine Albert Boxler

$65Alsace, France
Boxler's Sommerberg bottlings are among Alsace's greatest expressions of granite terroir, and this 2023 captures the vineyard's crystalline purity. The combination of power and precision is rare — this is a Riesling that can stand alongside the best dry whites in the world. Built to age but thrilling now.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Intense and precise — lemon blossom, crushed white stone, and green apple. A hint of beeswax and white peach adds richness without weight. Flinty, mineral aromas dominate as the wine opens.

Palate

Taut and razor-sharp, with electric acidity driving the wine from start to finish. Citrus — lemon and grapefruit — is layered over a core of wet-stone minerality. Green apple and a subtle honeyed note provide mid-palate flesh, but the wine remains bone-dry and focused.

Finish

Exceptionally long, with lingering citrus zest and a chalky, mineral persistence that seems to hum after the wine is gone.

Food Pairing

The Riesling's bright acidity and mineral backbone cut through the richness of the braised sauerkraut and smoked pork, while its subtle honey note complements the dish's gentle sweetness. A classic regional pairing at its finest.

The Story

Jean Boxler tends some of the steepest granite slopes in Niedermorschwihr, continuing four generations of meticulous viticulture at a domaine known for producing some of Alsace's most age-worthy Rieslings.

Feudi di San Gregorio Fiano di Avellino DOCG 2023

Feudi di San Gregorio

Fiano di Avellino is one of southern Italy's noblest white grapes, and Feudi di San Gregorio has been its most consistent ambassador. The 2023 delivers the grape's signature interplay of fruit richness and mineral tension at a price that makes it an easy recommendation. A serious food wine that punches well above its weight.

Pieropan Soave Classico Calvarino 2022

Pieropan

Calvarino is Pieropan's demonstration that Soave can be a wine of real complexity and ageability. The 2022 vintage captures the vineyard's volcanic character with precision, delivering a wine that overperforms its modest price point by a wide margin. This is the kind of bottle that converts Soave skeptics.

Graci Etna Bianco DOC 2023

Graci

Alberto Ferrara's Graci estate farms pre-phylloxera vines at high altitude on Etna's north slope, producing wines of remarkable tension and purity. The 2023 Etna Bianco from Carricante grapes delivers volcanic terroir in the glass — mineral, saline, and vibrating with energy. This is one of Italy's great white wine values.

Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair

Thibault Liger-Belair is better known for his Nuits-Saint-Georges reds, but this Bourgogne Blanc demonstrates the same meticulous farming and minimal intervention approach. It's an honest Chardonnay that lets the limestone soils of Burgundy speak clearly. Outstanding value.
