El Tesoro Mundial Collection Mizunara Cask Finish Añejo

El Tesoro · La Alteña Distillery (NOM 1139)

80 proofAged approximately 2 years in ex-bourbon barrels, then finished in Mizunara oak casksArandas, Los Altos, Jalisco, Mexico
A cerebral añejo that trades the usual vanilla-caramel comfort for architectural spice and dry aromatic wood. It rewards patient sipping and makes an eloquent case for structure over sweetness.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Restrained and savory at first — cooked agave fiber, sandalwood, and dried orange peel — opening into subtle incense, white pepper, and a whisper of coconut husk from the Mizunara.

Palate

Lean and taut through the entry, with roasted agave, green pepper, and warm cedar. Mid-palate brings a distinctly Japanese-oak signature: sandalwood, clove, and a faintly smoky spice, framed by mineral salinity rather than caramel sweetness.

Finish

Long, dry, and structured — lingering agave, cracked pepper, and a resinous oak echo that fades slowly without any sugary weight.

Cocktail Suggestion

The Mizunara Old Fashioned — 2 oz El Tesoro Mizunara Finish Añejo, 1 barspoon agave nectar (light), 2 dashes Angostura bitters, 1 dash orange bitters. Stir with a large clear ice cube for 20 seconds. Express an orange peel over the glass and drop in. Garnish with a single toasted cedar chip on the side (optional).

Food Pairing

Miso-glazed black cod, or grilled duck breast with a shiso-orange reduction — dishes with umami depth and aromatic wood-spice affinity.

The Story

Produced at Felipe Camarena's historic La Alteña distillery — where agave is still crushed by tahona and fermented with wild yeasts — this Mundial release finishes classic El Tesoro añejo in rare Japanese Mizunara oak, a wood so porous and prized it is normally reserved for the finest Japanese whiskies.

Código 1530 Añejo

Código 1530

Código 1530 Añejo is a masterclass in what happens when spirit and stave become intimate. The use of Cabernet-seasoned French White Oak—rather than the more common American oak ex-bourbon barrels—creates a distinctive bridge between the agave world and the wine world, making it a perfect fit for the 'Barrel's Inner Skin' theme. The wine-stained wood imparts a refined tannic structure and fruit-forward complexity that complement rather than overwhelm the cooked agave heart. This is contemplative, after-dinner tequila that rewards patience.

Tequila San Matías Gran Reserva Extra Añejo

San Matías

Casa San Matías has been making tequila since 1886, and this extra añejo demonstrates a mastery of time and barrel. Three years in American oak have deepened the spirit without erasing its agave identity—a furnace of patience made liquid. At under $90, it punches well above its price class, delivering the contemplative depth of bottles twice its cost. A superb after-dinner pour for those who believe great tequila rewards the same reverence as aged whisky.

Fortaleza Reposado Winter Blend 2024

Fortaleza

Fortaleza's Winter Blend series marries reposado lots of varying age into a seasonal expression that highlights the interplay between agave and oak. The tahona-crushed agave gives it a textural richness that roller-milled tequilas rarely achieve. This is tequila where craft and material are inseparable.

Siembra Azul Añejo

Siembra Azul

A quietly excellent Añejo that resists the modern impulse toward heavy oak and sweetness — David Suro's Siembra Azul remains a benchmark for honest, agave-first tequila at a fair price.
