Elvio Cogno Barolo Cascina Nuova DOCG 2019

Elvio Cogno

$53Novello, Barolo, Piedmont, Italy
Cascina Nuova is Elvio Cogno's entry-level Barolo, but entry-level in Novello still means serious wine. The 2019 vintage provides ripe fruit and round tannins while preserving the floral, earthy elegance that defines the commune. Built for a decade of aging but approachable now.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Dried rose petals and ripe cherry lead, followed by tar, dried herbs, and a dusting of cocoa. A faint truffle-like earthiness emerges with time in the glass.

Palate

Medium-to-full bodied with firm, fine-grained tannins that provide excellent structure. Tart cherry and wild strawberry are framed by cedar and dried violet. The tannins grip without clenching, allowing the fruit and earth to speak.

Finish

Long and savory, with lingering cherry, dried rose, and a mineral, almost iron-like quality.

Food Pairing

The wine's firm tannins and savory depth complement the rich, collagen-laden braise, while the saffron risotto bridges the floral notes of the Nebbiolo.

The Story

Elvio Cogno, a former winemaker at Marcarini, founded his eponymous estate in Novello in 1990, and it has since been carried forward by his daughter Nadia and son-in-law Valter Fissore, who farm the vineyards organically.

Trediberri

Trediberri makes some of the most approachable yet authentic Barolo on the market. The 2020 vintage brings warmth and ripeness while maintaining the elegance and restraint that defines La Morra. At this price, it's one of the best entry points into serious Barolo — structured enough to age but generous enough to enjoy now.

Tornatore Etna Rosso 2022

Tornatore

A crystalline expression of Nerello Mascalese grown on Etna's ancient volcanic slopes, Tornatore's 2022 captures the purity and tension of altitude-farmed fruit with effortless grace. Its bright acidity, ethereal perfume, and lava-stone minerality make it a hauntingly elegant red that punches well above its modest price. A wine that feels like sunrise breaking over a smoldering caldera—delicate, luminous, alive.

Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Vosne-Romanée 2021

Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair

This is Burgundy at its most transparent—a wine that channels the deep limestone memory of its terroir with breathtaking clarity. Comte Liger-Belair's meticulous organic viticulture and gentle winemaking allow the stony, iron-laced character of Vosne-Romanée to speak unobstructed. A profound expression of mineral persistence that rewards patience and contemplation.
