Journeyman Featherbone Bourbon Whiskey
Journeyman Distillery · Journeyman Distillery
Journeyman Featherbone is a bourbon rooted in place — organic grain, estate-distilled in a former corset factory on Michigan's rural coast — yet its flavor profile wanders freely across caramel sweetness, orchard fruit, and earthy spice. It's a spirit that honors its foundation while refusing to stay still, making it a perfect emblem of roots meeting wandering.
Nose
Honeyed cornbread, dried apricot, toasted vanilla bean, a whisper of clove, and soft oak shavings — grounded yet gently exotic, like a farmhouse kitchen with the windows thrown open to distant orchards.
Palate
Medium-bodied and silky. Salted caramel and roasted pecans lead, giving way to baked apple, cinnamon bark, and a thread of dark chocolate. A subtle earthiness — damp grain, turned soil — anchors the sweetness, while a peppery rye spark adds restless energy.
Finish
Medium-long and warming. Maple sugar, charred oak, and a lingering nuttiness that slowly fades into a faint herbal dryness, like dried wildflowers pressed into the pages of a well-traveled journal.

Cocktail Suggestion
The Wanderer's Root — Muddle 2 thin slices of fresh ginger with 0.5 oz maple syrup in a mixing glass. Add 2 oz Journeyman Featherbone Bourbon, 0.75 oz Amaro Montenegro, and 2 dashes Angostura bitters. Add ice, stir for 20 seconds, and strain into a rocks glass over a single large ice cube. Express an orange peel over the surface and nestle it against the ice. The ginger's bright heat drifts over the bourbon's rooted sweetness — arrival and departure in every sip.
Food Pairing
The bourbon's caramel and orchard-fruit character harmonizes beautifully with the lacquered sweetness and smoke of slow-roasted pork belly glazed in a reduced apple-cider gastrique. The gastrique's tang echoes the whiskey's subtle acidity, while the pork's richness is cut by the bourbon's charred-oak backbone. A side of bitter greens dressed in cider vinegar completes the anchor-and-drift interplay — hearth comfort with a restless edge.
In the sleepy hamlet of Three Oaks, Michigan — population barely 1,700 — a former featherbone corset factory found new life as Journeyman Distillery. Founder Bill Welter, after wandering from law school to Scotland's whisky trails to apprenticing under craft distillers, returned to the Midwest with a pilgrim's conviction: that great bourbon could be born from organic local grain and a building with its own deep roots. The Featherbone name itself is an artifact of wandering — the corset factory once processed turkey quills shipped from across the country, transforming the humble into the structured. Welter's bourbon mirrors that alchemy. Every batch uses certified organic corn, wheat, rye, and barley, milled and mashed on-site, fermented with well water drawn from the same aquifer that sustained the factory workers a century before. It's a bourbon that could only come from this place but was dreamed up by a man who had to leave home to understand what home meant.
