Compass Box The Peat Monster
Compass Box · Compass Box (Blended Malt)
The Peat Monster is a masterclass in how smoke can be a cartographic tool—each sip maps distinct terroirs of Islay and the Highlands through layers of char, brine, and malt. It's wildly approachable for its intensity, making it a perfect gateway to heavily peated whisky or a reliable companion for the seasoned smoke enthusiast. At this price point, it punches well above its weight.
Nose
An immediate surge of coastal peat smoke gives way to charred driftwood and a briny, almost oyster-shell minerality. Beneath the smoke, there is honeyed malt, lemon zest, and a faint whiff of vanilla-scented candle wax. A lingering earthy note, like damp heather after rain, grounds the aromatic profile.
Palate
The palate is bold yet surprisingly balanced, with waves of campfire smoke and charred oak meeting a core of creamy malt and dried apricot. Black pepper and clove spice rise mid-palate, joined by a subtle cocoa bitterness and sea-salt caramel. The texture is medium-bodied and slightly oily, carrying the smoke without overwhelming the sweeter undercurrents.
Finish
Long and warming, with lingering ash, smoked honey, and a final flicker of maritime iodine. The char slowly fades into a gentle malty sweetness.

Food Pairing
Hot-smoked salmon draped over charred sourdough toast, finished with crème fraîche, capers, and a squeeze of lemon. The smoky fish mirrors the whisky's peat, while the charred bread echoes the oak char, and the crème fraîche provides a cooling counterpoint to the spice.
Compass Box founder John Glaser built The Peat Monster as a living blend—a smoke map redrawn with each batch, charting the burned lines between Islay's maritime peat bogs and Highland barley fields.
