Domaine Gauby Les Calcinaires Côtes Catalanes Rouge 2022

Domaine Gauby

Côtes Catalanes, Roussillon, France
Gérard and Lionel Gauby farm biodynamically in the arid foothills of the Pyrenees, and their entry-level red captures the wildness of the Roussillon landscape. This is a wine with more tension and complexity than its price suggests. Drink it slightly cool and let it open over an hour.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Crushed dark berries and fresh violets open onto a bed of garrigue herbs. A subtle mineral edge and hint of black pepper adds complexity.

Palate

Medium-bodied with vibrant cherry and blackcurrant fruit. The tannins are fine-grained and carry notes of dried herbs and a touch of cedar. There is a coiled energy to the acidity that pulls everything forward.

Finish

Medium with lingering cherry, violet, and a stony mineral thread.

Food Pairing

The herbal char of grilled lamb meets the wine's garrigue and cedar notes, while the lamb's fat softens the tannins and lets the cherry fruit shine.

The Story

Farmed biodynamically by Gérard and Lionel Gauby in the schist-and-limestone hills of Calce in French Catalonia, Les Calcinaires is the estate's introductory cuvée from old-vine Grenache, Syrah, and Carignan.
