Domaine de la Vieille Julienne Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge 2020

Domaine de la Vieille Julienne

Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Southern Rhône, France
Vieille Julienne's organic farming and old-vine grenache produce a Châteauneuf with real depth and terroir expression. The 2020 vintage shows exceptional balance — power without weight, complexity without noise. One of the quieter great estates in the appellation.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Dark cherry and blackcurrant lead, layered with dried violets, crushed herbs, and a distinct garrigue quality. Underneath sits toasted spice and a trace of cedar.

Palate

Rich and concentrated without being heavy. Cherry and berry fruit dominate, supported by fine-grained tannins and a mineral backbone. Mid-palate brings gamey complexity and a hint of leather, with cedar and toasted notes adding structure.

Finish

Long and savory, with violet, cherry, and a gentle woody warmth that lingers. The tannins resolve cleanly.

Serve & Pair

Food Pairing

Slow-roasted lamb shoulder rubbed with rosemary, thyme, and garlic, served with ratatouille and olive oil-roasted potatoes. The wine's herbal complexity and gamey depth are a natural companion to the lamb.

The Story

Jean-Paul Daumen tends some of the oldest vines in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, farming organically since the 1990s across plots of galets roulés near the northern edge of the appellation, where the mistral wind shapes both vine and character.
