Domaine de la Bouïssière Gigondas La Font de Tonin 2020

Domaine de la Bouïssière

Gigondas, Rhône Valley, France
The Faravel brothers farm some of Gigondas' highest-altitude plots on the Dentelles de Montmirail, and La Font de Tonin showcases what elevation brings to Grenache — freshness, tension, and a floral lift that distinguishes it from heavier valley-floor wines. The 2020 vintage offered ideal conditions, and this wine captures the vintage's generosity without excess.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Dark cherry and blackcurrant dominate, with violet florals and a note of dried herbs. There is a mineral, earthy undertone and a whisper of cedar from careful aging. With air, a touch of garrigue — rosemary, thyme — emerges.

Palate

Full-bodied and structured, with ripe berry fruit and cherry at the core. Cedar and toasted oak provide a savory framework, while fine-grained tannins carry the wine forward with grip but not aggression. A subtle marzipan quality appears on the midpalate, adding an unexpected layer.

Finish

Long, with lingering dark fruit, cedar, and a final dusting of violet and dried herb. The tannins resolve gracefully.

Food Pairing

The wine's garrigue-tinged fruit and structured tannins are a natural match for slow-braised lamb, with the cedar and herbal notes in the glass amplified by rosemary and thyme on the plate.

The Story

Brothers Thierry and Gilles Faravel tend old-vine Grenache on steep, clay-limestone terraces beneath the jagged Dentelles de Montmirail, farming organically and vinifying with whole clusters to preserve the perfume of altitude.
