G4 Reposado Madera Tequila

G4 · El Pandillo (NOM 1579)

80 proof7 monthsLos Altos de Jalisco, Mexico
Felipe Camarena's G4 Reposado Madera showcases extended oak contact (8 months versus the standard 6) without losing the agave's voice. The extra time in wood deepens the butterscotch and vanilla dimensions while the tahona-crushed agave keeps the core bright and honest. A reposado that bridges the gap between blanco freshness and añejo richness.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Cooked agave takes the lead, supported by butterscotch, light vanilla, and fresh-cut grass. Behind that is a mineral earthiness and a faint note of baking spices — cinnamon and nutmeg.

Palate

Medium-bodied with a rounded, slightly buttery mouthfeel. The oak influence is measured: soft vanilla and caramel weave around bright citrus and roasted agave. Mid-palate brings pepper and a touch of honey before giving way to herbal mint.

Finish

Medium length, with agave sweetness, lingering pepper, and a clean mineral close.

Cocktail Suggestion

Agave & Spice Paloma — 2 oz G4 Reposado Madera · 0.75 oz fresh lime juice · 0.5 oz agave nectar · Top with grapefruit soda · Build in a salt-rimmed highball over ice, garnish with a grapefruit wedge.

Food Pairing

The tequila's butterscotch and cinnamon echo the mole's complex chile and chocolate sauce, while the agave brightness and pepper spice cut through the richness of braised turkey.

The Story

Fourth-generation tequilero Felipe Camarena produces G4 at El Pandillo using a tahona and deep well water from the Volcán de Tequila aquifer, aging this expression in American oak for a full eight months to develop what he calls the "madera" (wood) character.

Código 1530

Código 1530 Añejo is a masterclass in what happens when spirit and stave become intimate. The use of Cabernet-seasoned French White Oak—rather than the more common American oak ex-bourbon barrels—creates a distinctive bridge between the agave world and the wine world, making it a perfect fit for the 'Barrel's Inner Skin' theme. The wine-stained wood imparts a refined tannic structure and fruit-forward complexity that complement rather than overwhelm the cooked agave heart. This is contemplative, after-dinner tequila that rewards patience.

Tequila San Matías Gran Reserva Extra Añejo

San Matías

Casa San Matías has been making tequila since 1886, and this extra añejo demonstrates a mastery of time and barrel. Three years in American oak have deepened the spirit without erasing its agave identity—a furnace of patience made liquid. At under $90, it punches well above its price class, delivering the contemplative depth of bottles twice its cost. A superb after-dinner pour for those who believe great tequila rewards the same reverence as aged whisky.

Fortaleza

Fortaleza's Winter Blend series marries reposado lots of varying age into a seasonal expression that highlights the interplay between agave and oak. The tahona-crushed agave gives it a textural richness that roller-milled tequilas rarely achieve. This is tequila where craft and material are inseparable.

Siembra Azul

A quietly excellent Añejo that resists the modern impulse toward heavy oak and sweetness — David Suro's Siembra Azul remains a benchmark for honest, agave-first tequila at a fair price.
