Esperanto Añejo Tequila
Esperanto · Destilería Tequilera Las Américas (NOM 1480)
Esperanto Añejo is a study in how bitterness, properly harnessed, becomes sophistication. Two years in barrel give it a tannic backbone and roasted depth that never overwhelms the agave's inherent sweetness. A contemplative sipper that rewards patience and pairs beautifully with the issue's theme of beauty emerging from bitter origins.
Nose
Opens with deeply roasted agave and bittersweet dark chocolate, layered over toasted oak and dried orange peel. A thread of black pepper and dried herbs gives the aroma a savory, almost medicinal complexity. Beneath it all sits a warm caramel sweetness that keeps the bitterness in check.
Palate
The entry is bold and slightly tannic, with cocoa nibs and espresso bitterness meeting cooked agave and butterscotch. Mid-palate, cinnamon bark and charred oak bring a drying spice that frames ripe tropical fruit—mango and roasted pineapple. The interplay between bitter and sweet is seamless, each yielding to the other in waves.
Finish
Long and warming, with lingering dark chocolate, leather, and a final flourish of white pepper. The bitterness resolves into a clean, dry minerality that invites the next sip.

Food Pairing
The tequila's dark chocolate and coffee notes dovetail with the multi-layered bitterness of mole negro—charred chiles, cacao, and spice—while the short ribs' richness matches the spirit's caramel sweetness. Serve with black beans and warm corn tortillas.
Crafted from highland agaves slow-roasted in traditional brick ovens, Esperanto Añejo spends two full years in American oak barrels, emerging with a bittersweet complexity that its makers liken to the hard-won eloquence of a universal language.
