Ardbeg Wee Beastie

Ardbeg · Ardbeg Distillery

$4594.6 proof5 YearIslay, Scotland
Wee Beastie is Ardbeg's deliberate argument that age statements don't tell the whole story. At five years old, it trades refinement for raw, feral energy — and that's entirely the point. It's an essential bottle for peat lovers who want the distillery's DNA in its most unrestrained form, and it punches well above its price.

Tasting Notes

Nose

An immediate wave of charcoal smoke and medicinal peat gives way to sharp citrus oil and a briny, almost coastal minerality. Beneath the intensity there's a flicker of vanilla sweetness and fresh green malt that keeps things from becoming one-dimensional. Give it time in the glass and a subtle waxy lemon note emerges alongside black pepper.

Palate

The entry is punchy and unapologetically young — crackling bonfire smoke, espresso-dark roasted malt, and a tarry phenolic core that coats the tongue. Midpalate brings cracked black pepper, a squeeze of charred lemon, and fleeting hints of creamy vanilla that barely survive the peat onslaught. The higher proof gives it real viscosity without any harshness, carrying a surprising amount of complexity for its age.

Finish

Medium-long, drying, and deeply smoky with lingering notes of smoked meat, iodine, and a last wisp of dark cocoa. The peat echoes well after the sip, leaving a satisfying ashy warmth.

Serve & Pair

Cocktail Suggestion

Smoke Signal Highball — 2 oz Ardbeg Wee Beastie, 4 oz chilled soda water, 0.25 oz honey syrup (1:1), expressed lemon peel. Build over ice in a tall glass, stir gently, garnish with the lemon peel.

Food Pairing

Charred beef short ribs with a coffee-chili rub, or a wedge of aged Manchego drizzled with smoked honey.

The Story

Born on the wild southern coast of Islay, Wee Beastie is Ardbeg's youngest core expression — deliberately bottled at just five years to capture the distillery's famously intense peat character in its most untamed state.
