Tenuta delle Terre Nere Etna Rosso Calderara Sottana 2021

Tenuta delle Terre Nere

$48Etna, Sicily, Italy
Calderara Sottana is one of Terre Nere's most expressive contrada bottlings — a wine that translates its specific patch of volcanic soil into the glass with remarkable clarity. Nerello Mascalese grown at altitude on lava flows produces a red of Burgundian grace with distinctly Mediterranean soul.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Wild strawberry, dried rose petals, and crushed volcanic stone greet the nose. Beneath the red fruit, there is a saline minerality and a whisper of dried herbs — oregano, thyme — that evoke the Etna landscape.

Palate

Elegantly structured, with tart cherry, pomegranate, and blood orange framed by fine-grained tannins. The volcanic mineral signature is persistent, lending a stony, almost chalky texture to the mid-palate. There is a gentle spice note on the back end.

Finish

Long and savory, with lingering mineral tension, dried herbs, and a clean, lifted acidity that pulls you back for another sip.

Food Pairing

The wine's bright acidity and mineral backbone stand up to the meaty texture of swordfish, while the capers and tomatoes echo the wine's saline, fruity character.

The Story

Marc de Grazia's Tenuta delle Terre Nere, founded in 2002 on the north slope of Mount Etna, farms old pre-phylloxera vines rooted directly in decomposed lava rock across multiple contrada plots.

Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair

This is Burgundy at its most transparent—a wine that channels the deep limestone memory of its terroir with breathtaking clarity. Comte Liger-Belair's meticulous organic viticulture and gentle winemaking allow the stony, iron-laced character of Vosne-Romanée to speak unobstructed. A profound expression of mineral persistence that rewards patience and contemplation.
